The medina of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador (from the Phoenician word Migdol, meaning "small fortress"), is an exceptional example of a fortified town from the mid-18th century surrounded by ramparts modeled on Vauban. Built according to the principles of modern European military architecture, in a North African context and in perfect harmony with the principles of Arab-Islamic architecture and town planning, it played an important role in international trade and as port in the subcontinent. Leave your hotel at 7:30am and head north. Essaouira is 173 km from Agadir, approximately 3 hours by road.
